Sunday Night Pasta Sauce

Writer's picture: SKILL IGNITESKILL IGNITE

This rich red tomato sauce is a staple in Italian cuisine. Having a great tomato sauce recipe is going to make or break your Italian dishes. So I've got you covered, this recipe was curated based off my grandma's red sauce. This Sunday night pasta sauce is my base sauce for so many Italian dishes I make. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Ingredient List: Red Sauce

  • 1 can whole peeled plum tomatoes

  • 6 cloves garlic (minced)

  • 1 medium yellow onion (medium dice)

  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

  • 1/2 cup packed basil leaves (torn)

  • 2 teaspoons Salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Step by Step instructions:

Start by chopping 1 yellow onion (medium dice). Next peel 6 cloves of garlic and mince.

Next in a small sauce pot on medium low heat, add 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil.

Once oil is hot add onions, garlic & 1 teaspoon of salt. Sauté on medium low heat for 15 minutes until a deep golden brown color has formed. Make sure the heat is not too high. You don't want to burn the garlic. You should always have the flame low and slow when caramelizing your onions and garlic.

Now add 1 can of tomatoes to the pot and add 1 teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let the tomatoes simmer on low heat for 30 minutes.

Once tomatoes are done cooking take a potato masher and crush them for a chunky sauce. If you like a thinner sauce all you have to do is blend it.

Once your sauce is done simmering, it's time to add half cup of the freshly torn basil.

The colors of the rich tomato sauce & the fresh basil mixing are a sight to see.

Enjoy this on some pasta or on an eggplant parmesan. This is a great sauce for most Italian dishes that call for a red sauce.

Happy Cooking!!
